Dear Daughters

I am delighted to see the outstanding leadership shown by our Chapter Presidents and those working hard to train new members, form new chapters and to rekindle those that have lost their way.  It is because of this level of leadership that Daughters of the King continues to thrive and grow as an order of the Episcopal Church.

What makes a good leader? Well the best example we have is Jesus Christ.  Consider Jesus – he could have had the world at his feet but instead he got down on his hands and knees at the feet of those he was leading.  He commanded all power and chose to use it to heal the sick.  He could have come down from the cross and brought hell to pay on his accusers but he chose to stay there and die for us.

What does the bible say about leadership?  “The greatest among you must be a servant”.  (Matthew 23:11).  So, as you are serving in any sort of leadership position, within the church or outside of the church, think about how you can serve those you lead.

Let’s think about those we are leading today?  Are we doing it with a servant’s heart?  How are they doing?  How can we make it better for them?  God calls leaders, Christ serves as the roll model, and the Holy Spirit serves as the guide.  Choose this path to follow and you will change lives for the better.

Dear Daughters,

How many different ways are there to worship God?  Probably as many ways as there are people who worship Him because worship is primarily a relationship shaped by who we are.  It is the shape of your life lived in awareness of God.  It is a reflection of your personality, your gifts, your needs and your passions.

When we think of worship we usually think of the corporate kind; shared experience of songs, liturgies and orderly services.  This is certainly a part of worship but it is not the whole thing.  It isn’t even half of it.

Worship is a state of mind. In the broadest sense, it is the totality of our relationship with God.  It involves talking to Him, listening for Him and looking for Him behind the scenes of things.  It is being aware of His presence and acknowledging and seeking His purpose in all we do.  It is getting more familiar with Him through His word so we can know how He thinks and feels about things. It is a God-consciousness that permeates everything we do.

If you were asked to rate your relationship with God on a scale of one to ten, one being you think about God occasionally and ten being a warm, close personal relationship, where would you be?  Remember rating your relationship with God a ten is not arrogance.  It is out of necessity that we strive for and reach this level.  We must be conscious of God all the time, otherwise we risk flying apart at the center.  We have nothing to hold on to without Him and must seek his wise counsel daily in order to function properly in the world in which we live.

Hopefully this message will help you to reflect on the current state of your worship relationship with God and lead you to an even closer personal relationship as you seek Him on a daily basis.

September President's Corner

September is probably best known for Labor Day and that transition from Summer vacations back to school and work.  Work can be something you do outside the home, inside the home or as part of your church family.

Do you take much time to think about your mission at work?  I didn’t until I read a devotional about it.

You may think that work is just something you do because you have to make a living or take care of your family.  But, work is much more than that.  It is your mission field.  Regardless of what you do, virtually everyone works in some kind of community.  If there are people around you there is a mission field.

Now, this does not mean that you should be witnessing to everyone all the time or even that you have a pre-set strategy to winning your co-workers to Christ. It does mean that you need to pay attention to relationships because it is through relationships that our mission to show the Christ within us is carried out.

Peter says we should always be ready to explain our Christian hope should anyone ask us about it (1 Peter 3:15).  Are your prepared?  Our mission strategy should be to love others enough that they will see and ask about our hope in Christ.  Maybe this is the true mission of our lives and we just happen to get paid at the same time?

So this month, everyday when you go to what you call work, be a witness for Him through simply being a loving, hope-filled Christian in relationship with those who don’t yet know the love of Christ.  This is something we call can do.
