Daughters of the King Self-Denial Fund
Submitted by Shirleen Wait, Funds Chair

The Self-Denial Fund was initiated by Lily Funston Ward, a woman who was both a DOK member AND a missionary living in China.  Lily requested that the Daughters pray for those on the mission field.  Her letter was submitted to the fourth annual DOK Convention, held in 1896, and in the following year an annual “self-denial week” was established.

Initially, the funds were used to aid Miss Charley Warnock, a Daughter and a missionary who would fill Miss Ward’s place.  When missionaries were withdrawn from China, the Fund supplied grants to missionaries in South America—and over the years, this fund has continued to support the work of missionaries, all over the globe.  The current work of Self-Denial Fund recipients is reported in the spring issue of The Royal Cross

So as you gather coins when you “deny yourself,” your coins become part of Jesus’ Great Commission “Go ye therefore….”

Last year, Self-Denial Grants were awarded to these people in our diocese.

  • Dabney Buckingham, Mercy Ships
  • St. John’s Cathedral Early Learning Center
  • The Rev. Shari Hobby (and two Daughters) Global Teams
  • Canon Pete and Shirleen Wait, Anglican Frontier Missions
  • Fr. Derek and Dorothy Washington, Barnabas International
